Two Democratic National Alliance (DNA) parliamentarians Vijitha Herath, and Ajith Kumara along with Provincial Councillor Naleen Hewage ten others have been remanded till August 16 after being produced before the Galle Magistrate’s court on late Thursday evening.

The DNA activists were arrested by police on Thursday following a protest calling for the unconditional release of the party’s leader General (retired) Sarath Fonseka who is currently under detention.

The DNA claimed that the police used brutal force by firing tear gas and rubber bullets on a peaceful demonstration.

Police claimed that DNA activists had assaulted police personnel.

A spokesperson for the DNA said that the MPs were arrested when they had turned up at the Galle police station to lodge an official complaint in regard to the incident earlier in the day. (LB)
