After the death of 17-year-old student Akkriti Bhatia due to an asthma attack at a New Delhi school, SPS Apollo Hospital has initiated a programme of distributing nebulisers free of cost to all schools in the city.

Nebulisers were distributed at the Government Senior Secondary School, Bharat Nagar Chowk; DAV Public School, BRS Nagar; DAV Public School, Pakhowal Road and DCM Presidency School, Jamalpur Chandigarh Road.

Dr Dinesh Goyal and Dr Akashdeep Singh, senior consultant pulmonologists at the hospital, visited a few schools for demonstrating the use of the devices. Within one week all other schools will be covered, the doctors said.

With Akkriti’s death bringing the necessity of medical preparedness of schools to the fore, parents are taking precautions to avoid such incidents.

On an average, one out of every 13 school-going children has asthma and 14.7 million school days are missed each year due to asthma, the top cause for school absenteeism.

Dr Akashdeep Singh of the SPS Apollo Hospital, said nebulisers are useful for giving high doses of medication, but are generally prescribed only for people with severe asthma.

“Asthma can be controlled through medical treatment and by managing environmental triggers,” he added.

“Asthma is an inflammatory lung disease. Increasing pollution, post-harvest season, dry weather conditions and suspended particulate matter have caused sudden spurt in the number of asthma cases. Parents should take their wards for regular check-ups so that the disease does not flare up in the summers, the peak season,” he said.
