(Lanka-e-News -31.May.2011, 11.45PM) Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse had summoned the State intelligence service (SIS) new Director DIG Chandana Wickremeratne and bitterly castigated him over the violent scenes at Katunayake yesterday, during the protests staged by workers of the Katunayake trade zone. The defense Secretary who is smarting under the assaults launched on the higher rung police officers had blamed the intelligence service for non reporting about such a protest demonstration.
The defense Secretary had questioned whether the SIS officers have not crept into the trade zones and mingled with the workers. He had told them to do so at least now. He had instructed that the SIS officers infiltrate into the unions of the Railways, CTB, Ceylon Petroleum Corporation , SL Telecom , Ceylon electricity Board and nurses .
The DIG who came in for heavy flak from the defense secretary has later told an assistant of his ‘ this is hell of a situation . I took up this post and not even a month has elapsed. What has (Gajanayake) my predecessor been doing ? The SIS chief Gajanayake ,who continued in service extending his service period by six months is due for retirement in August .
The new SIS chief Wickremeratne is a close Gajaya (close acolyte) of Gotabaya . According to sources within defense Ministry , it is Gotabaya’s intention to make his Gajaya the chief of the three Depts. – Criminal investigation Dept .(CID) ; the terrorism investigation unit(TID) and the SIS, and promote him to the rank of senior DIG.
Meanwhile , the President has berated the IGP in his choicest language – a favorite hobby of the President which he enjoys thoroughly . He had yelled at the IGP ‘firstly , you got yourself disgraced at the hands of the prisoners . Now you got the DIGs mauled’, according to reports .
According to unconfirmed reports , a worker who was involved in this protest has died at the Ragama Hospital, but attempts have been made to give the impression he had not died by fixing the machines and equipments to his body. Even relatives of those workers who have been hospitalized are barred from seeing them. At the UNP media briefing today , UNP M P Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena bemoaned , even the hospital areas are being made high security zones by the Govt. to cover up its atrocities.
Vasantha Samarasinghe speaking to Lanka e news said , the Govt. is moving heaven and earth resorting to every trick in the book to suppress this death due to police shooting until the current human rights conference which is now on in Geneva is over .
The pro Govt. media states that the police had attacked the workers without taking instructions from the Defense Secretary , and action is therefore to be take against the officers for abusing the President’s powers .
