India reigned supreme at the 11th South Asian Games which concluded yesterday, in Bangladesh, by taking first place with 90 gold, 55 silver and 28 bronze medals, but host Bangladesh underscored its potential as a force to be reckoned with by taking third place behind Pakistan (second).
South Asian sporting giant India largely dominated the proceedings in disciplines like archery, athletics, badminton, judo, shooting, swimming and table tennis.
Pakistan had their moments in athletics, judo, weight lifting, wrestling and wushu which helped them finish second overall.
Host Bangladesh couldn’t have asked for a better performance in finishing the games with 18 gold, 23 silver and 56 bronze medals. This marks their best performance ever at the SA Games.
The highlights for Bangladesh in the 12-day-long games came in football, boxing, wushu and most importantly in cricket when they beat Sri Lanka in the final, by six runs.
Sri Lanka which produced the fastest man in South Asia on Monday, could only add two bronze medals to their overall tally yesterday when Chalitha Ranjana (Singles) along with Tharindra Dharshani and Nayananjana Weerakoon (Doubles) bagged bronze medals in table tennis. Sri Lanka’s final medals tally read 16 gold, 34 silver and 54 bronze medals.
