(Lanka-e-News, June 17, 2010, 6.30PM) UNP M P and Deputy leader Karu Jayasooriya speaking to the media at UNP media Headquarters said, he is reminded of what late Dr. N M Perera warned, that is, if this Executive Presidency power is seized by a politician who subordinates people benefits and country’s progress to his personal power greedy ambitions, there can arise another Hitler in our midst. This is precisely what we are heading for with this President Mahinda Rajapakse, Jayasooriya stated.

The President who had been winning every election by promising to the people that the Executive Presidency shall be abolished immediately , after coming to power uses the same Executive Presidency powers to fortify his dictatorial ambitions. After winning the last General election urging the people to get him a 2/3 majority to amend the constitution and abolish the Executive Presidency ,he has done a U turn now ,and is striving to obtain a 2/3 majority in Parliament to extend his period in office by another term , and more. The President’s power greed is very obvious because , even before he has been sworn in for the second term as President which will only be in November , he is moving heaven and earth to amend the constitution and continue for another term ,he bemoaned.
Since the new Govt. was elected a few months ago, the President has not evinced any interest to solve the burning problems of the people, rather, day in and day out, on stage and in every gathering he is canvassing support to become a President for a third term. People are starving, workers are being retrenched while others are hard pressed due to the unprecedented economic pressures they are facing and the whole country is in aturmoil with none of the promises made by the President and his Govt. fulfilled. While this is the sad state of affairs in the country, the President’s obsession is with prolonging his term and fattening his family rule.
There are so many Govt. Institutions which are white elephants draining away public funds in billions and billions due to mismanagement and corruption. The Govt. is doing nothing to halt this and save those billions with a view to providing relief to the people. Rather, it is allowing those Institutions to incur more losses and passing the burdens on the masses trying to recoup the losses by imposing taxes, levies on the people and increasing tariffs and rates, he pinpointed.
