
(Lanka-e-News, Nov.12, 2009, 7.35PM) The National youth service Council is spending Rs. 10 million just for its 20 minute gymnastic display event at the SLFP convention to be held in Colombo 0n the 15th of Nov.
JVP M.P. Sunil Handunetti in a letter addressed to Minister of Youth affairs, Pavithra Wanniarachi had pointed out that 2400 youths (boys and girls) are undergoing training in camps from last 09th to this 15th for an arabic gymnastic event.; and a sum of Rs. 10,20,364.00 has been paid as an advance to Ranathisara Builders to supply meals to those in the camps. Besides, an agreement has also been signed with that Establishment for Rs. 51,01,824.00.
According to the letter of Handunetti, the total estimated expenditure for the training camps alone is Rs. 89,57,000.00! In addition, with the other expenditures on the dance attires and kindred matters on the day of the convention are reckoned, the total expenditure will exceed Rs. 10, million.
Handunetti has further asked in his letter to the Minister on what is the purpose the Govt. is trying to achieve by spending Rs. 10 million for just a 20 minute event on the day of the convention aimed at boosting a political party’s exhibitionism.
Have the approvals of the Ministry tender Committee, Cabinet and Treasury been obtained in accordance with the Govt. regulations? In the present context when there is a massive economic crisis in the country and the Govt. is unable even to present a budget, how can the Govt. waste such huge sums of monies on a political party’s campaign, Handunetti has questioned in his letter.
