Special Media regulatory act for print & electronic media

The government is now planning to take a special media regulatory act to the parliament, highly placed government sources revealed.

Amidst the accusations which were thrown at some journalists last week on LTTE connections, now the government is working on to bring this special regulatory act. The act will be made by the information ministry and it will cover all the print and electronic media.

“The initial discussions have already been made on the act. The purpose of the act to regulate media in a better way and to uplift the standards in Sri Lankan media field. It will focus on the qualitative aspects of journalists and journalism in Sri Lanka. During past few years we heard so many accusations and allegations on journalists and media institutions. That’s why the government is looking forward to make this step” the government sources further revealed.

The duration of the preparation period of the act has not been decided yet. According to the sources final decisions on some regulations are yet to be taken. However, the sources further claimed that the government does not want to drag this for a long period and the completion would be done very soon.
