Sri Lanka ’s Gamya among first 25 of Miss World 2009

(Colombo Lankapuvath December 12) – Sri Lanka ’s contestant for Miss World 2009, Gamya Prasadini Waidurya Wijayadasa, has progressed in ranking to 22nd from among 114 during the fourth week at the beauty pageant being held at Johannesburg in South Africa . The finals are to be held on Saturday December 12.

Gamya Wijayadasa who won the title Miss Sri Lanka recently progressed in the last five weeks of the pageant with no ranking in the 1st week, being in the 90s during the 2nd week, coming 38th in the 3rd week and 22nd in the fourth. With only a few days to go, she hopes to proceed further and reach the finals.

In preparing for Miss World in South Africa Gamya is educating herself about South Africa apart from what she already knows about it and is excited about the country and the culture. It is a dream come true for her to visit the land that Nelson Mandela calls home whom she respects so much for his strength of character. In the sense of the competition, she is preparing herself in every way imaginable from wardrobe to grooming.

The experience as a whole would be novel and exciting for her but particularly meeting fellow contestants from different nations carrying wonderful diversity in their cultures is great. She will get a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience over a 100 cultures at one time. She said that she is also looking forward to the wildlife in South Africa. There is no better place in the world for a safari!
Gamya defines herself as a woman who holds more than mere beauty as her asset. She has a lot of depth and substance as to who she is and she has achieved this through hardship and hard work. She is also a great dancer and has a talent for singing.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is to perform a traditional dance which is the first time in the 59 year history of the Miss World Finals night that such a dance is being held by Sri Lanka.

Twenty three year old Gamya has recently completed her Masters degree in Applied Commerce, after gaining a Bachelors degree in science. Her ambition is to become an organisational psychologist and a diplomat.

The Miss world finals are held today (12) in South Africa. Former Miss World Bollywood superstar Priyanka Chopra will appear before an estimated global TV audience of 1 billion viewers when she takes to the stage as very special guest at the 59th Miss World Final 2009
